Why Detoxify Your Body?

You probably know that you need to clean out unnecessary files and programs on your computer on a regular basis in order to keep it running smoothly and efficiently. The same is true for your body, which is being burdened on a daily basis with harmful food-related toxins that prevent your body from performing at peak levels. Detoxifying your body can help it function at its best.  At the end of a successful detox, your body can focus less of its attention on combating toxins and more energy on important cognitive and physical activities.

Benefits of A Detox Diet

Like purging a computer of unnecessary files, participating in a detox diet for a number of days can result in the removal of many toxins that have accumulated in your body over time. When toxins are purged from the body, many people feel a heightened sense of health and general well-being.

Some of the common effects of toxins in your body are:
-sluggishness
-indigestion
-fatigue
-poor complexion
-trouble focusing
-insomnia
-allergies
-and irritability

At the end of a detox diet, many people find themselves much improved in each of these areas, and more.  With a proper detox diet, your body will still receive the calories and vitamins it needs on a daily basis to keep you active and energized while flushing out the harmful toxins.

Your day-to-day routine shouldn't be affected too much while engaging in a detox diet; working and social activities are still possible, although you may experience headaches, lethargy, irritability, and altered digestive functioning in the first few days.  If you exercise consistently, this may be the part of your routine that is affected the most, as you'll most likely need to cut back to simple walks and beginner-level yoga classes.  People's bodies respond to detox diets differently, but the effects are generally of a lesser nature than the effects associated with a full food fast.

The Detox Diet World

There are many different detox diets to choose from, but most of them have a few core elements in common, which center around the main benefits of detoxifying your body. Many of the foods that we ingest on a regular basis can slow our bodies down or even harm us in cases of over-consumption. Because of this, during a detox it is wise to completely cut out the most toxic elements of our daily diet. For instance, almost every detox diet will include cutting out alcohol, coffee, tobacco and other drugs from your diet. This will give your body a chance to purge these toxins from your body, which will make your body feel much better by the end of your cleanse.

In addition, most detox diets will ask you to take in certain foods and beverages that would otherwise not be a regular part of your daily diet. For instance, many detox diets suggest that you take in at least 2 liters of water per day and some recommend ingesting various herbs to optimize the detoxification process, as well as vitamins and supplements to ensure that you're getting the proper nutrients and calories while purging toxins.

The End is Worth the Means

While it can be uncomfortable to cut out pleasures such as caffeine from your diet, and while it takes a deliberate effort to choose the right foods and beverages during a detox, the end result is a healthier and higher functioning body.
